A good sound performance was how co-manager Kevin Lee described Jarvis Brook Reserves performance on the way back to Limekiln on Saturday afternoon after another high scoring game between these two sides.
Kevin Lee and his compadre Ian Black were deep in conversation mid morning when they lost Ralph O’ Brien to possible tonsillitis and they decided on a back three of Nick Leftley , Dan Reid and Harry Jones as sweeper who would turn out to be man of the match, not bad for a sixteen year old. Charlie Burch was welcomed back from his injuries woe and he played centre midfield alongside skipper Dan Wright, The two wingers of Mike Hodges and Adam Short would provide width with and hopefully service to the front two of Craig Harman and John Elms with Paul Wilkins slotting in behind them to link up play.
Having played out a three all draw just four weeks ago the goals started flowing as early as the second minute with four in the first twenty minutes, But once the Brook got themselves ahead for the second time, they turned chances made, into goals scored.
Willingdon opened the scoring after the Brook had cleared a corner form fully thirty five yards. The ball was hammered back in and over Neil Baker the Brooks keeper.
After excellent work by Mike Hodges a through ball by Paul Wilkins allowed Craig Harman to finish off with a low drive and level the scores.
Their second goal came from the opposite wing where Adam Short teased the defence, his cross eventually found John Elms who toe poked the ball home from close range.
Having got themselves ahead they conceded a sloppy equaliser. They gave away possession easy and did not shut down Willingdon’s left winger who’s cross somehow lobbed over the advancing Neil Baker who just got finger tips too but could not hold and the ball, and it bounced kindly for the Willingdon forward to slot home and bring the scores level.
This did not deter the Brook greatly and they held continued possession. Wilkins looked sharp in the box and twice made good chances for himself but could not find the finish. He also produced a cross that although John Elms was stretching to take the cross on the half volley knows he should have done better with.
Jarvis Brook took the lead again two minutes before the break after good work again on the left by Mike Hodges. He squared the ball across the edge of the box to Dan Wright who had one touch to control the ball and one to drive the ball high into the top left hand corner.
Both Black and Lee agreed that there was no need for many words at half time only encouragement and advice and the desire to get the first goal of the second half which they duly did when again Adam Short drove down the right wing , he pulled the ball back to Wilkins and his measured pass found Harman bearing down on goal and for the second time in the match he squeezes the ball under the keeper.
The management made their first substitution of the game when they took off Dan Reid who had played in possibly an alien position to him on the left of a back three with a sore ankle and grazed knee. None the less he played an excellent game but was now struggling so was replaced by Ian Storer on fifty five minutes.
On Sixty minutes Adam Short had his last and yet most telling effort of the game. It came from the left involving Hodges and Harman and Harman’s cross was met perfectly by Short on the volley right footed from twenty yards leaving the keeper no chance. It was now that Short was replaced by the young Liam Williams on the right wing.
During these passages of play it must be noted that Nick Leftley and especially Harry Jones were dealing with anything that came towards them with great aplomb. It gave both Kevin Lee and Ian Black great satisfaction to see the young teenager play like this, having taken him along as substitute early in the season watching him at training on Thursday nights and see him come into the team and do as well as he has is great testament to him as a player. However it was quite galling when he beat the co-manger to a header late in second half!!
Charlie Burch came through sixty five minutes of the game but was starting to feel his knee so he was replaced by Ian Black on sixty five minutes
Jarvis Brook sixth and final goal with twenty minutes to go and from a Mike Hodges corner that made its way into the box where Paul Wilkins struck a home a well deserved goal.
An excellent and well deserved win for the Brook who go into the last three games of the season against higher opposition on a high.
